I am writing to ask
if you and your member organisations would like to take part in this
new, worldwide event – to raise money for Musequality.
Musequality sets up and supports communal music-making projects for
disadvantaged children in developing countries, giving them the
chance to engage in an activity that will teach them the
self-belief, self-confidence and skills they need to turn their
lives around. We already support five projects, in Uganda, South
Africa and northern Thailand, and are actively fundraising for a
sixth project in Goa, India.
We were launched when Chiswick resident and professional violinist
David Juritz, leader of the London Mozart Players, busked Round the
World and Bach, playing Bach for solo violin on pavements, in parks
and plazas in 50 cities in 24 countries on every continent except
Antarctica, to kickstart our funding. As we were launched with a
busk we thought it would be fun to hold an annual fundraising busk.
Our first is this year and musicians – any age, any genre, anywhere
– are invited to take part. The week starts on Monday, 8th June and
ends on Sunday, 14th June when we particularly hope young people
will join in and help us set a record for the biggest busk around
the world.
Our world busk website has tips and guidance on busking, including
for first time buskers:
www.worldbusk.org . And our Musequality website explains our
work and describes the projects we support:
www.musequality.org .
As you are musicians who sing together you will know all about the
benefits of communal music-making and performing in a group.
Benefits such as self-confidence, teamwork, leadership, compromise,
negotiation, goal setting, problem solving, ambition, discipline,
the value of practising and hard work, numeracy and many more – all
are essential in other aspects of life. The majority of the
children in our projects are homeless; many are orphans. Engaging
in our projects lifts them off the streets, out of poverty and away
from the risks of drug culture, violence and crime.
It would be wonderful if your members were to get involved in our
busk – it is short notice but there is still time to register and
organise their busk. Perhaps you could add information about it to
your website and, if so, if you would like more information do get
in touch.
