30 July - 6 August 2006 Canford Summer School at Sherborne presents a Choral Course with Nigel Perrin entitled the 'Lighter Side', assisted by Tim Uglow. Encores for Choirs volume 2 is probably even more fun than volume 1, so we have chosen to use this as the core repertoire for this year's course. Almost guaranteed for performance will be John Rutter's ever popular It was a lover and his lass, Bob Chilcott's energetic best-western Buffalo Gals and Cantabile's amusing Orpheus on the Underground. We will have our own 'Last night of the Proms' with the Choral Fantasia on Nautical Airs while this year’s new experience will be a vocalised raga - Dravidian Dithyramb - a wild passionate hymn from Southern India: but to keep the swingers groovin’ we’ll probably 'round off' with Paris Rutherford's lively arrangement of Duke Ellington's It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing. Be prepared for hard work! This course is not for the timid conservative, nor the enthusiastic 'sing-along'; a good ear and a secure sense of rhythm are essential and a loud costume for the concert will help. T

here is also a Choral Workshop with Nigel Perrin on Mozart's Mass in C Minor K427/K417a on the first evening of the course (30th July).  All members of the school are welcome to participate.

6 - 13 August 2006 Canford Summer School at Sherborne presents a Choral Course with Julian Wilkins entitled the 'Songs & Psalms', assisted by Tim Uglow, with vocal coaches Ruth Roberts & Chris Dixon. This year's exciting repertoire explores both secular and sacred texts - 'Songs and Psalms'. The central work will be Ralph Vaughan Williams' Five Tudor Portraits, a choral suite for chorus and orchestra with mezzo-soprano and baritone soloists. Each 'portrait' of Tudor England is founded on the colourful poetry of John Skelton (1460-1529): a rollicking character study of the alehouse owner, Elinor Rumming; the most tender of love songs My pretty Bess; the sardonic rejoicing at the demise of a cantankerous, dislikeable clerk, John Jayberd; the lament of Jane Scroop; and finally the exuberant arrival of Jolly Rutterkin. As one would expect, Vaughan Williams tackles each subject with musical mastery, producing a compelling work that has something for everyone whether they're in the chorus, orchestra or the audience! In addition, to complement the featured work members of the course will study and perform a selection of shorter sacred masterpieces taken from the excellent volume European Sacred Anthems edited by John Rutter. The works by Mendelssohn, Monteverdi and Viadana wonderfully reflect their psalm texts, andwho can resist Bogoroditse Devo - Rachmaninov's radiant setting of the Ave Maria (Hail Mary) taken from the All-night Vigil? Altogether a rich choral feast! Once again expert vocal and choral tuition – an integral part of the course’s structure – will be provided from within the faculty, giving innovative and stimulating insights into voice production with reference to the works being studied.

There is also a Choral Workshop with John Huw Davies on Verdi's Requiem on the first evening of the course (6th August).  All members of the school are welcome to participate.

13 - 20 August 2006 Canford Summer School at Sherborne presents the Arts of Choral Direction with David Lawrence assisted by Julian Wilkins. Designed for directors of choral societies, chamber choirs, church choirs and youth choirs at all levels, this course offers to each participant a unique programme of study tailored to their experience and requirements. The week will focus on non-verbal communication, conducting technique and the fundamental skills of encouraging ‘musical thinking’ and imparting vocal and choral technique to singers. Additionally we welcome singers with moderate to good sight-reading ability to join the course as choristers. The course forms its own choral group from its members therefore ensuring a week of intensive study and varied repertoire. All conducting students will have opportunities to direct the course choral group and two sessions during the week have been allocated to work with a) a large chorus and b) a chorus and orchestra. Each of these ensembles will be formed from other students in the school. Additionally, there will be opportunities for some course members to take part in a workshop concert later in the week. Selection for these sessions will be at the sole discretion of the Course tutors.

In addition David Lawrence will conduct an open rehearsal with orchestra of William Walton's In Honour of the City of London, on the first evening of the course (Sunday 13th). All members of the school are welcome to participate.
