St. John’s
Cathedral, Salford invites applications for choral scholarships
of up to £1000 for the academic year 2007–2008. The choir consists of
around 24 men and women singers, and provides a wide spectrum of
traditional and contemporary liturgical music for a weekly Mass and for
other celebrations at the Cathedral and around the Diocese. Welcome
qualities among prospective members are musical ability, experience and
enthusiasm, but most of all we value versatility: ideally you’ll be at home with the entire range of Catholic musical idioms, ancient and modern, serious and popular, and happy to work with singers of widely differing experience and ability. All the better if you also have good sight-reading, or a trained voice, or play an instrument or two! But nobody’s perfect. This year we’re especially on the lookout for sopranos, but we welcome applications from capable and enthusiastic singers in all voices, soprano, alto, tenor and bass. Further information and application forms are available on the web at http:// www.salforddiocese.org.uk/cathedral/choir/ . If your application looks promising we’ll invite you to a friendly audition, and to come and sample a rehearsal. We look forward to receiving your application, and to welcoming you to St. John’s. There’s no closing date, and applications are welcome until all the places have been filled. Martin Barry, Choirmaster and Director of Music. Choral Scholarships - value approx. £4,000 The church of All Saints, Fulham, southwest London, is seeking to award four Choral Scholarships (soprano, alto, tenor and bass) for the year beginning September 2007. The Choral Scholars sing with the choir at approx 60 services throughout the year, principally at the Sunday morning Eucharist and Sunday Evensong. Rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings and prior to each service. The choir, comprised of volunteers along with the four Choral Scholars, is fast becoming one of the finest church choirs in the UK. As our repertoire is wide-ranging, the ability to sight-read well is important. We are a dynamic and lively group and we take our socializing seriously as well. The Choral Scholarships are open to singing students who intend to pursue a professional career in music and are studying at undergraduate or postgraduate level. The Scholarship, tenable for a year in the first instance, carries an award of £2,000, plus the opportunity to earn a similar amount through singing weddings, funerals and memorial services – making All Saints one of the best-funded scholarships in London.
