Guildhall School of Music and Drama A Cappella Choral Course. Our A Cappella Choral course spans 400 years of English choral history from the Reformation to the 2nd English Renaissance. The course will include madrigals from Musica Transalpina I of 1588 which had a profound effect on the development of the English School of composition in Renaissance England. Yonge, who published this collection, is historically connected to the City of London, and worked as a lay clerk (singer) at St Paul’s Cathedral and lived within walking distance of the old St Paul’s. Works by renaissance composers Tallis, Byrd, Gibbons, Dowland, Morley, Weelkes and Purcell through to the Second English Musical Renaissance composers Vaughan Williams, Parry, Elgar, Holst and Britten.

A Cappella Choral is suitable for anyone with choral singing experience. Attendees can expect to sight read and polish vocal material from these periods, learn and better understand trends and influences which helped shape the music of these times. The course will, through practice, sharpen skills which make for a higher quality of singing and performance. Participants will then perform a selection of songs worked on in nearby St Giles’ Cripplegate.

International Oratorio Choir workshop, Montecatini Therme (Italy) We will work on  Gioacchino Rossini’s Stabat Mater. This is the central piece of church music written by this Italian opera composer. It is based on a mediaeval poem called Stabat Mater Dolorosa. Following Italian traditions of church music, Rossini divided the mediaeval sequence in Stabat Mater into clearly separated solo and ensemble movements. The care with which he undertook this task is reflected in the fact that he used no material from earlier works whatsoever. Stabat Mater contains both operatic elements and features of church music: lively melodic patterns and dynamic rhythms can be found alongside contrapuntal sections composed in the old style.

The region presents a wonderful spectacle of natural luminescence and colours for an unforgettable musical event. The final concert will be held in front of the Basilica Santa Maria Assunta in Montecatini Terme (Italy) on 26 July 2014 at 22:00 hrs within the context of the 6th International Toscana Music Festival. More information about these projects: www.choral-workshops.com

Hereford Cathedral Of all the cathedrals in the UK, Hereford seems to be a great favourite with choral singers. I’ve been asked many times to organize trips there and and now I’m delighted that, through Choral Holidays, we are able to do so.

Our task is a simple one; sing choral evensong on 25th, 26th, 27th & 28th August in this wonderful building which is the home of a community that has worshipped continuously for well over 1200 years. And, as we are there for several days, we get to sample that wonderful feeling of becoming part of the Cathedral on a day to day basis, and to enjoy the sensation of becoming part of history as our voices mingle with those of the people who have sung there before throughout the last 1200 years.

The great thing about this holiday is that we get to prepare for each of the services thoroughly, but, as there is only one service on any given day, it’s all fairly relaxed. The price of the holiday includes your music, a learning CD and your tuition. It does not include food or accommodation.

There is nothing quite like the feeling of getting comfortable with being the choir of a cathedral. we invite you to come along and join us on what will be an unforgettable trip. For more details see www.choralholidays.com/hereford.

30 August - 6 September 2014

International Oratorio Choir Workshop , Riva del Garda (Italy). We will work together on Mozart's Coronation Mass. The Coronation Mass in C major (KV 317) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, was most probably composed for the Easter service of 1779 at the Salzburg Cathedral. Immediately after his death this church composition, which was probably Mozart’s most popular, became the preferred mass setting for services at imperial and royal coronations as well as at thanksgiving services.

The festive symphonic elements and the clear separation of solo and choir voices are typical of this mass. Through its musical expressiveness it surpasses all other Salzburg masses. The rehearsals will take place besides Lake Garda. The lake presents a wonderful spectacle of natural luminescence and colours for an unforgettable musical event. The final concert will be held in Riva del Garda (Italy) on 18 October 2014 within the context of the 8th International Lago di Garda Music Festival.
